Originally an honor guard of officers and ex-officers of the Army and Navy who came together to stand guard over the remains of President Abraham Lincoln. The Illinois Commandery was formed in 1879 in Chicago and met about 9 times a year. They also held memorial ceremonies each year on the anniversary of Lincoln's death. Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and earned degrees from Kenyon College and Harvard Law School before starting a career as a lawyer in Cincinnati. Hayes served as a major general in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1864.
